Last weekend I had a fun (but a little wet!) day with a great couple in DC. We spent most of the time in the Georgetown area. Looking forward to your wedding in August. Hopefully the weather in Maryland will be a little better.

The "Feel"
Posted by: mmoberg | Jul 6, 2008 (9:51 p.m.)
When I am asked to create images of a wedding there is a tension between what I "feel" and what may be the reality captured on the camera. I have stated many times that the new cameras are TOO sharp. Just as a great Alfred Hichcock movie, you don't have to show everything to convey a powerful idea.
Sure photojournalism can have power in its images but it is a sometimes infrequent process. I am asked to create thoughtful and artistic images at each wedding. The only way that I can do this is to "feel" what the event means to both the bride and groom. The "feel" is where I begin my wedding photography. The "feel" that I look for at a wedding is love; love expressed through family, through events and most importantly though each other.
Only after the wedding do I then try to refine the interpetation. My post production is all about getting the feelings tuned in. "What should I help the viewer see?" "What in this image is detracting from the true emotions that are there?" This is a process where if purposefully but subtaly guide the viewer through a storyline, image by image. If I do my work successfully the images will create emotions that convey how the wedding "feels."
Below is an example of such an image. This image was just before the wedding as the priest and the groom are waiting to start the processon. The light was raining down through a glass opening onto a water pool where baptisms are preformed and it reflected onto the two of them with a rather dramatic shadow on the wall. I thought that it revealed the tension of the moment. As a photojournalistic image I thought it was good.

Just as I had hoped, the image was interesting but in my opinion it was a little scattered on what it was trying to say. After messing around with the image I felt that the groomsman on the right was taking away from the image and by upping the contrast and converting it to black & white it created an image which is so much more powerful. I hope that you "feel" this in the image.

Brooke & Rick

A few weeks back Brooke & Rick were married at the Vinoy in St. Petersburg. It is a beautiful hotel which I would suggest you make a time to visit. Great people watching on the veranda. The wedding went like clockwork and as you can see the was both beautiful and fun.
Enjoy the images.

Last week a great couple from Chicago came down for their engagement session. They are getting Married in St. Petersburg next year so this was a perfect time for them to get some of their planning done and spend some time with me as their tour director through Tampa. For their engagement session we visited Ybor, Channel Side and the beach.
I think I will have some great images for their wedding. For now, enjoy some of their images from the engagement session.
